A new salon license usually means empty shelves: backbar, color, wax and disposables all still need a supplier

Week-one Chicago salon licenses: a beauty-supply route

Published

Tasha runs a one-van salon-supply route out of Avondale, bringing color, backbar products, wax, gloves and towels to independent stylists, nail techs and estheticians around Chicago. Her best accounts are studios that just got their city license, because a new owner is stocking shelves for the first time and hasn't settled on a distributor yet.

She used to hear about them weeks late, from a stylist who had already moved in and already had a supplier. A new City of Chicago business license is the earlier signal: the city publishes it with the business name, street address, ZIP, community area, license type, the business activity it covers, and the issue date.

What changed

She bought ChiLead for $19. After Stripe checkout, the CSVs were emailed directly from Armorlight: 7-day and 30-day files of newly issued Chicago business licenses, plus ready-made restaurant, contractor and professional-services cuts. Tasha only needed one column, business_activity, to find the salons.

That week

  • Mon: opened the 7-day file: 155 new licenses issued Oct 19 to Oct 23. She skipped the 25 Pop-Up Retail User licenses (20 of them in ZIP 60609 in New City, short event-vendor permits) and the 25 retail food licenses, and went straight to the 28 Limited Business Licenses.
  • Tue: searched business_activity for hair, nail, skincare and waxing. That left 9 brand-new studios: 4 listing hair services, 4 skincare, 2 nail and 2 waxing (some list more than one). All 9 were in different community areas, from Lincoln Park, Lake View and Irving Park on the North Side to Hyde Park and Chatham on the South Side, so she split them into a north loop and a south loop.
  • Wed: walked the north loop with a sample tote: a starter backbar kit, a wax-and-disposables bundle, and a first-order discount. A studio that just opened is short on everything at once, and showing up in week one beats the distributor that shows up in month three.
  • Thu: opened the 30-day file for the bigger picture: 569 new licenses issued Sep 28 to Oct 23, including 113 Limited Business Licenses and 31 personal-care businesses across 20 community areas (16 list hair services, 15 skincare, 8 waxing, 5 nail, 3 massage). Near West Side led with 4, Lincoln Park, Lake View and Near North Side had 3 each, and her own Avondale had 2, so she put those on a standing every-other-week delivery loop.

The file became her Monday planning sheet: each new salon license is a reason to be at that door this week, before the owner signs with someone else.

Illustrative scenario: Tasha is a composite operator, not a named customer. The license counts, types, business activities, community areas, ZIPs and dates come from real ChiLead 7-day and 30-day files from today's weekly refresh (generated Oct 26, 2026).
